I first tried microgreens from Little Wild Things City Farm after meeting Mary Ackley at RootingDC. I was hooked! They are the very nutritious and delicious first sprouts of a plant, and are good to throw into any recipe - a seasonal grain bowl, on top of tacos, or on any salad. I love them so much, they're one of the seasonal vegetables featured in Harvest.
When did you become interested in farming? I've always been drawn to working outdoors and in nature, but I chose to study environmental engineering because I grew up in a suburban household and the expectation was always to go to college and get a professional degree. I became more seriously interested in agriculture while studying for my graduate degree at the University of Vermont - I took a wonderful course in botany and also saw some of my friends pursuing careers in farming and agriculture so I thought it could be a realistic possibility. After my graduate degree I ended up taking a job in the foreign service, trying to find a balance between my desire for adventure and field work, and a stable paycheck. I really started experimenting more with growing vegetables and reading a lot about agriculture and innovative farmers who were finding ways to farm sustainably but also make a good living while I was living overseas with the foreign service in Sri Lanka.
What is ultra-local? I just made up the term ultra-local when thinking about a tagline for my business. This weekend I was at our neighborhood farmers market in Bloomingdale, and you just can't get any more local than having a farm about 4 blocks from the market in the middle of the city. I know others are using the term 'hyper-local', but I just like the way 'ultra-local' sounds :) I'm as local as you can possibly get to my customers.
What is your favorite microgreen or blend? My favorite is our custom 'mild salad mix' - it consists of micro broccoli, micro red russian kale, and micro red acre cabbage, has a wonderful brassica flavor and it absolutely beautiful with the red and pink stems from the cabbage and kale.
